Here’s what you need to do as a business leader to attract and retain employees
Amazon is the latest company that has mandated employees work five days per week from their office. What else can companies do to encourage employees to return to the office?
Peldon Rose, an expert in workplace design, asked 1,000 UK adults, who spend at least one working day per week in the office, how they felt about the work and what employers could do to make it more attractive.
Survey: Office perks most wanted by employees include free coffee, snacks and parking
Refreshments, like coffee machines and free soft drinks (such as snacks), are the most desired office features for UK employees, according to 37% of respondents. This is most valued by employees in marketing, PR, and advertising.
Car parking is a perk that many areas outside London want. 37% of employees are interested in this benefit. Just under a third of employees (31%) want more meeting rooms and 38% don’t even have them.
Employees also want personal storage and plants, with 29% each. Office spaces are made more pleasant by adding greenery. Personal storage also makes employees feel valued, but 65% of them lack it.
Around 27% of workers want allocated desks or breakout spaces. 30% would be more comfortable with these spaces if they were available. For 27% of employees, ergonomic office setups are a must, including comfortable chairs and second screens. Other features that are popular include access to a fitness center (25%), outdoor work spaces (25%), private kitchens (27%).

Boost convenience. Personalised workspaces are essential. Offices that are more attractive can be made by providing ergonomic furniture and secure storage.

Ask your Employees. The best way to find out what motivates employees to work in the office is by asking them directly. By incorporating feedback from employees through conversations or surveys, and by incorporating themes that are common to the design of your office, you can create an environment where they want to spend time.
