According to a new study by the hiring platform Indeed, nearly one-third of UK small business owners admit that they are reluctant to implement AI in spite of its potential benefits.
This hesitation to adopt AI can hinder growth, especially in terms of efficiency gains.
This report, which surveyed 1000 leaders of small business across the UK found that, while 41 percent were eager to integrate AI in their operations, many were unsure where to start. This uncertainty is exacerbating challenges for small businesses, which represent 99.2 percent in the UK.
Owner and employee anxiety fuel AI resistance
AI is a concern for many business owners. Nearly 40% said that they would rather stick to the familiar methods because of their fear that AI mistakes or improper handling could harm their reputation. The employee resistance is another factor. 26 percent of respondents reported direct pushback by workers. A third of businesses (33%) struggle to convince employees of the benefits of AI, and 43 percent are concerned about unauthorised AI usage by their staff.
As the success of their business rests heavily on their shoulders as well, many business owners view AI adoption and its implementation as a risk that they simply cannot take. Nearly 40% of respondents said that their business relies too heavily on them for them to risk adopting new technologies such as AI.
Small businesses at a disadvantage
When it comes to AI adoption, smaller firms face different challenges than their larger counterparts. Nearly half of respondents (48%) feel that they can’t compete with larger businesses in this area due to the financial burden of integrating AI. Many people are aware that AI can help to reduce costs over time. For example, 41 percent of respondents believe AI could lead to cost savings.
49 percent of respondents believe that AI can take their businesses to the next stage by streamlining processes, allowing more time for strategic planning and driving innovation. 24 percent of respondents said that AI could even lead to a four day work week.
The Demand for Simple and Accessible AI Solutions
The needs of small business owners to overcome AI hesitation are well-defined. Forty percent of small business owners are looking for easy-to-use AI software, and 29 percent would like AI features built into their existing products. 29 percent of respondents are looking for AI integration consulting and 26 percent for government grants.
In order to address these concerns, Indeed, Small Business Britain and the British Chambers of Commerce are continuing with their “People for Business”, offering support for small businesses. The webinar will guide companies through the implementation of AI and its benefits.
Industry leaders urge AI adoption
Caroline Barbour, Senior Market Manager for SMB at Indeed emphasized the importance of AI adoption by small businesses. “Small business is the backbone of UK economy and it’s crucial that they have the support and tools to grow. Many are nervous about AI adoption, but they also recognize its transformative potential. Our “People for Business” program provides small businesses with the resources needed to integrate AI confidently and thrive.”
Michelle Ovens, CBE, founder and CEO of Small Business Britain, shared this sentiment. “AI represents one the biggest shifts in business today.” Small businesses need to embrace the change, despite their fears. They can take advantage of the AI opportunities with the right support and guidance.”
AI – The Path to Better Work-Life Balancing
AI has the potential to be a game changer, despite fears. Automation of routine tasks is seen as a way to create a more fulfilling work environment. 43 percent of small business owners agree that AI can make the work experience more pleasant. One third (35%) of small business owners believe that AI will improve their work-life harmony, and almost as many (31%), expect it to increase job satisfaction.
When small businesses consider the pros and the cons, it is clear that AI can play a crucial role in their success in the future, if the right tools and supports are available to make AI accessible and effective.
