AI Tools are advising women and minorities to ask for lower pay in salary negotiations

AI advises women, minorities and others to undervalue themselves. Employers are at risk if employers follow suit. According to a new study, AI encourages women, minorities and others, including themselves, to request lower salaries. The study showed that it doesn’t always do this, but the differences between salary recommendation are significant and can be frighteningly disparate.

ChatGPT’s o3 model, according to Ivan Yamshchikov – co-author of the study and professor of AI at the Technical University of Wurzburg Schweinfurt, Germany – recommended that a woman applicant request $280,000. It then advised a male candidate to ask for $400,000

The Next Web reported that Yamshchikov said, “The difference between the prompts and the advice is only two letters. The difference in the advice is $120K per year.”
