Learn how to delegate effectively this summer

Whoever runs their own company knows how difficult it is to leave! If you are planning to take a vacation or break during the summer, now is the time.

Heath Gunn is the founder of South Yorkshire based business and leadership coach company Move That Mountain. He shares his top five tips for you to adapt to the delegation mindset that you need to take a well-deserved break.

He says: “Running a company doesn’t mean you can’t take care of yourself and rest. This will help you be more productive upon your return.” Follow these tips for successful delegating.”

  1. Set clear expectations

Remember that ambiguity can be the enemy of delegation. Be clear about the following before you delegate a task:

  • What success looks like and the desired outcome
  • When is the deadline for a task?
  • What resources are available?
  • How much authority and decision-making do they have?

It is important to communicate clearly and effectively with each other so that both parties are on the same page.

  1. Select the right person to delegate

Consider the strengths and skills of those you’re considering delegating tasks to. Delegation can help you match people with tasks they enjoy and excel at. It is also a great way to develop and grow.

Delegation is not just about finding the person who can do the job the quickest. It’s also about finding the person with the skills and knowledge to complete the task. Delegating work to someone with the necessary skills and knowledge should be done carefully.

  1. Support

You may need to provide guidance and support in order to achieve the best results. You can set up a schedule to check-in so you don’t micromanage and to ensure the person to whom you delegated feels responsible but also trusted.

Assure that you’ve provided them with the tools to succeed. For example, any training relevant, information, or introductions to important contacts. By doing this, you will be laying the foundation for success.

  1. Learn from mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes. It’s all part of the process. Don’t fix things yourself if they don’t work out as planned. Ask questions such as:

  • What did not work?
  • What can we do better next time?
  • What can we learn from the experience?

This approach, which uses ‘we’ instead of ‘you’, fosters a culture that is more focused on continuous improvement than blame. This will encourage your team members to take ownership, and develop trust and confidence.

  1. Give credit to where it is due

Not least, celebrate and acknowledge your team’s success! Celebrate your team’s wins, even the smaller ones! Recognize and appreciate contributions in public. This encourages positive behavior and inspires employees to continue performing at their highest level.

It is easy to say thank you and show your appreciation. It creates a positive working environment and strengthens the bond between your team members.
