Why Vanity Titles Can Hurt Your Hiring

Your recruiting pipeline may be ruined by quirky job titles. The hiring process is becoming more competitive, and the trend towards “vanity” job descriptions makes it harder for hiring managers to do their jobs. You can’t tell by looking at a resume if “Chief Happy Guru” is really Chief Human Resources Officer if you don’t know the difference.

In an article for Business Insider by Andrea Wasserman, she advised job seekers to describe their work in “vanity” terms, instead of using their actual titles. These alterations will show what you did, not what is on your HR file. She wrote:


“Rather that considering a vanity name an exaggeration, think of it a more precise expression of your role which helps others understand your expertise and the way they can work together with you.”

It can be hard to find the right candidate. If a new title helps a qualified applicant get out of the applicant tracker and into an interview, what’s the harm in a little vanity.
