One quarter of employees feel that their employers are ineffective at managing stress


According to a recent poll, more than a quarter (28%) of workers believe that their employer does not do enough to manage workplace stress.

ACAS commissioned the survey of 1,052 respondents to coincide with Stress Awareness Month. The survey found that 37% of respondents felt their workplace is effective in managing stress, while 9% were unsure.

Acas has also stated that according to the Health and Safety Executive 16 million working hours will be lost due to stress, depression, or anxiety in 2023-24.

The factsheet for employers is a guide to managing stress. It advises companies to be alert for signs of stress in their staff. Managers should be available, approachable and open to informal conversations with employees who are stressed.

Acas recommended that managers receive training on stress management. They should also be sensitive to the concerns of their staff and support them in their discussions. Acas also recommended that managers receive training.

Acas interim chief Executive Dan Ellis stated: “It’s encouraging to see employers who are good at stress management, but it’s concerning that almost three out of ten employees believe that their workplace is lacking.”

Stress can affect anyone and its effects can be severe. “It is vital that employers are able to identify signs of stress in their staff and offer support,” Ellis said.
