CIPD appoints AI expert to support businesses

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has appointed a strategic adviser for artificial intelligence.

Danilo McGarry, an expert in AI and digital transformation, will fill the new position. McGarry, a former head of AI for Citigroup and UnitedHealth Group and CIPD member, has advised on AI implementation programmes in large international organisations. He also delivered AI training to top consultancy firms.

According to the CIPD 2024 member survey most (61%) of senior leaders saw navigating AI as a challenge for them. McGarry will be working with the CIPD in order to help it develop the tools, guidance and support it provides to its members and employers in their quest to understand AI’s business benefits and to respond to the profound change it is bringing to society and the workplace.

He will also be working with the CIPD on its research into AI and the impact it will have on the HR profession, as well as the work of the CIPD in implementing AI.

McGarry will advise the CIPD Board on AI use within the CIPD, and support HR’s work in the government-sponsored BridgeAI program. BridgeAI involves the CIPD in research on AI applications in organisations, refining frameworks to adopt ethical AI and extending AI skills frameworks and understanding employers’ needs.

McGarry stated that he was looking forward to the collaboration with CIPD to “help support the people profession” in its role of delivering AI’s great potential to create better jobs, working environments and positive outcomes for organizations.

Peter Cheese, CIPD’s chief executive, stated that the CIPD is delighted to learn from McGarry’s “extensive knowledge, connections, and research on AI legislation, policy, and implementation.”

He said: “The rapid advancement of AI presents both challenges and opportunities to employers. We’re likely going to see significant changes in the way work is done, as well as the type of work that people do. We want to support and encourage this agenda for the people profession.

“Through Danilo’s work, we will continue to support organisations in adopting AI ethically and responsibly, and ensuring that it is implemented so as to drive business performance, and create good jobs for people.”
