Sarah Vaughan of Angelica Solutions is calling for the government to provide more financial assistance to small businesses in the Spring Budget. This includes recruitment and flexibility of workforce.
Sarah Vaughan says, “The overhead costs for recruiting and training new employees are significant to small businesses.” While there are subsidies for apprenticeships that are recognized, less formal training is not supported at all. If we could receive a meaningful subsidy on the first-year graduate salary, it would allow us to expand our payroll and invest in future professionals.
Angelica Solutions’ ethos is “Build wells, not bring water”. This is one of my mantras. I want people to become independent and not dependent.
Any move to eliminate zero-hours contracts is bad for business, as it reduces flexibility for employers and employees. Angelica Solutions believes that a flexible workforce in an industry where resource requirements are constantly changing is essential. Employees also appreciate being able to fit work around their family and study commitments. “Any restriction on zero-hour contracts could severely hinder our growth and limit earning opportunities for our staff.”
Policymakers should consider the impact their decisions will have on small businesses such as Angelica Solutions, before the Spring Budget is released. If we want to see small businesses thrive, we must provide targeted support that takes into account the realities of hiring and training a dynamic workforce.
