A new analysis released by the ONS in April showed that the unemployment rate among people 16 and older remained unchanged from December 2024 until February 2025, remaining at 4.4%.
Mark Rothwell CEO of Hiring Hub said “We’ve definitely seen a decrease in the number of roles on the market. However, what we have seen in the last few months has been an increase in fill rate, which means that when employers advertise a position, they are more likely to be recruiting.
We believe that despite the fact that the statistics may seem a bit alarming, with the help of employers, recruiters, and some important advice, the country will reach a point in which job searching is no longer a problem. We hope that the unemployment rate will decrease within the next year.
Mark offers some advice to employers on how they can find the best talent.
- Grab the candidate’s attention. To make your ad stand out among the (odds) 40,000 job advertisements that are posted each week, you must grab the attention of potential candidates. - No referencesspan size=”font-weight 400 ;”>: Employers are concerned about a lack references, especially if they do not have one from the current employer. It is important to include at least two references, even if you left the company in bad terms. Most employers will only need to verify that you worked there. This shouldn’t cause any concern.
- Lies on your CVspan size=”font-weight 400 ;”>: Although it may seem obvious to some, embellishing your credentials can make you lose your job. Employers will immediately reject you if they find out that you lied during the application process.
- Appearing too comfortable in an interviewspan size=”font-weight 400 ;”>: Although it may seem strange, employers can take notice if you appear ‘too relaxed’ during the interview. This could be done by doing something else during a virtual job interview or sitting in bed. It has happened.
- Employers can be put off by candidates who don’t do their research. They may not know the company, its clients or successes. Interviewers may have a lot of applicants, so showing your interest in the company can be the difference between landing a job and not.
- Casual clothingspanstyle=”font weight: 400 ;”>: You should always present yourself professionally in an interview. It may seem obvious but even if you’re invited to a virtual job interview, you should still dress professionally. Candidates have attended virtual interviews in tracksuits or with wet hair. Employers may tolerate this in rare instances, but you should always present yourself as best you can.
