Specialists in employment law launch campaign against pregnancy and maternity discrimination

Martin Searle solicitors, employment law experts, launch the annual “Mind The Bump” campaign. They provide free legal advice for employers and employees in March to combat pregnancy and maternity discrimination at work.

The campaign, now in its 21st year, continues to combat entrenched prejudices and illegal practices that disfavor pregnant women and mothers who return to work.

Pregnant Then Screwed, a charity, has conducted research that highlights the extent of the problem. It shows that more than half of mothers have experienced discrimination either during pregnancy, on maternity leave or when returning to work. One in five women leave their job because of negative experiences related either to pregnancy or maternity.

Fiona Martin is the Director and Head for Employment Law at Martin Searle Solicitors. She said that despite decades of legal protection pregnancy and maternity bias remains a problem. We see too many employers, whether intentionally or unintentionally, disadvantaging female employees through discriminatory dismissals and redundancy decisions. They also refuse to accommodate requests for flexible work. “Many employees are not aware of their rights and can be subjected to discriminatory treatment.”

Martin Searle Solicitors offers free 30-minute legal consultations by telephone on every Tuesday and Thursday between 3.30pm and 5.30pm until March 2025. This confidential service is available to employers who are seeking advice on compliance as well as employees who have concerns about their workplace rights.

Mind The Bump is highlighting the new Protection From Redundancy Actspan size=”font weight: 400 ;”>, that came into effect last year. Martin Searle offers two free online seminars to help employers and advisors keep up-to-date on their responsibilities in regards to redundancy protection.

The secondspan size=”font weight: 400 is aimed at employers, managers, and HR. It offers best practices to ensure compliance, and provides support for employees. The second event, which will take place on Thursday, 27 March, from 10:30am to 12:00pm, is aimed at advisers and union representatives. It provides essential insight on how to represent employees and workers who are facing discrimination due to pregnancy or maternity.

Fiona Martin said: “Through the Mind The Bump Campaign, we hope to raise awareness and offer expert guidance and support employers and employees as they address workplace discrimination. Our helpline is available to anyone who has concerns. We can make workplaces more fair and inclusive by working together.
