Sheffield and Manchester have joined London as the capitals of ‘toxic workplaces’ in the UK

Are UK workplaces more toxic? The majority of British workers (52%) report feeling “very” or ‘fairly” stressed. A new Timetastic survey found that the toxic workplaces are most prevalent in Sheffield (10%) London (9.5%) and Manchester (9%). Employees in these cities said they were too busy, or under too much management pressure to take their annual leave. The rest of the UK felt 7.5% the same.

The “hustle” culture was most prevalent among those aged 25-34, with 17% of respondents saying that they felt pressure from management to not take a rest.

Looking at the gender differences, 9% men and 6% women said that they felt like this.

Oliver Higenbottam commented, “If this data shows anything, it is that employees still have a long way to go in order to maximize their annual leave allowance. It’s not just nice to take a break, it’s essential for your health, productivity, and well-being. The workplace must encourage this and ensure that their employees can enjoy a well-deserved rest.

This is part of an overall Timetastic survey that looks at annual leave in the UK. Over half of UK employees (61%) did not use all their annual leaves in 2023. This is approximately 20 million people who are working and have not used their annual leave.

What’s the story? What’s the story?

Holidays in the UK have gotten a little better

Even though the majority of UK workers don’t use all their annual leave entitlement, they are improving their ability to make the most out of their vacation time. In 2023, the number of employees who used their entire annual leave rose from 29% to 31%. Women were more likely than men to take all of their paid leave, with 34% as opposed to 29%.

Nearly 45% of the 45-54 year olds took advantage of every single day of their leave.

Choose Time Off over Money

In spite of the continuing cost-of-living crisis, people prioritize time off rather than extra income. In 2023, fewer workers chose to sell their annual leaves, down from 14% in the year 2022. Brits seem to be increasingly valuing recharging their batteries over boosting their pay.

In 2023, there will still be a significant gender gap in terms of financial compensation. Men are more likely than women to sell their time off (15% as opposed to 10%) and to receive payment for the time they have not used. Also, it’s worth mentioning that younger workers aged 16-34 are more likely to choose extra money than time off.
