The Scottish Government’s offer of pay to thousands of NHS staff has been accepted by the NHS in Scotland, concluding a process of consultation.
Unite and Unison represent administrators, managers, occupational therapy, scientists, nurses, estate porters, ambulance services, medical equipment management and theatre workers, as well as those in Scotland. The Royal College of Nursing is also expected to vote on this offer.
The pay offer consists of a 5.5% increase in all pay bands of the NHS Agenda for Change Pay Scale. This will result in an increase of PS1,278 for those workers in grade one, and a new rate of PS12.71 per hour. The package, which is backdated to April 1, 2024-25, will be valued at PS448million.
The offer was accepted by 93% of Unite members and 89% of Unison members.
Matt McLaughlin is the lead health organiser at Unison Scotland. He said: “Unison represents nearly two-fifths (25%) of NHS workers, and has negotiated the best possible deal. Acceptance of this offer shouldn’t lead to complacency on the part of the Scottish government. If ministers want to reward NHS staff, they must be more efficient in handling the annual pay round. Staff won’t receive a pay increase until the end of October.
James O’Connell is Unite’s lead negotiator in the health sector. He added, “Unite secured a pay increase that beats inflation for our NHS Scotland members.” The offer we received was the most reasonable under the current financial conditions and will give a substantial boost to the take-home pay. NHS Scotland employees should be rewarded and recognized for their hard work and professionalism.”
