LinkedIn reports that fewer UK employers offer fully remote positions

According to new data released by LinkedIn, the number of UK companies hiring for remote positions has declined.

The Economic Graph of the global professional network, which tracks the economy worldwide, has noted a drop of 6.2% in remote-working positions at large companies.

Small firms, however, are bucking this trend. They have seen a 2.3% increase year-over-year in the number of remote jobs they recruit.

These hybrid models are also growing in popularity among larger companies, indicating that they have become “the new normal”.

In July 2024, almost two-fifths (38%) were advertised as hybrid jobs, and only 10% as remote. Seven out of ten (70%) positions require employees to work in an office at least part of the time.

LinkedIn also found that multinational companies are more likely than smaller firms to offer remote-working jobs. This is because their structures often require employees to use video conferencing tools to communicate with coworkers around the globe.

Janine Chamberlin is the UK Country Manager at LinkedIn. She said, “It is important to balance in-person work with flexibility.” It’s important to remember that there is no one size fits all solution for how and where you work. Some projects are better suited to collaboration in person, while others may require more isolated thinking and can be done at home.

She believes that human skills, such as communication and creativity, are becoming more important.

Chamberlin continued: “Working as a group, sharing ideas, and being together is an important part of this, so collaboration should always be a priority when teams are present in the office.” It’s crucial that employees have the freedom to work at their best, and this means allowing them some flexibility. It is important for employers to maintain a competitive advantage.”
