The dispute between the University of Liverpool and its staff over hybrid work arrangements will continue with further strikes by hundreds of employees.
More than 340 staff members of the professional services department will be on strike between 14 August (the day A-level results are announced) and 16-19 Septembre, when the university welcomes new and returning students.
Many staff members are involved with graduation ceremonies, confirmation of places and clearing for the September intake of new students. Unite members have also agreed to a ban on overtime for ceremonies.
Unite began the dispute after accusing managers of not consulting enough on changes to hybrid working arrangements.
The university stated that it offered “progressive Employment” to colleagues in order to support “flexibility and choices” and work-life balance. The changes will require staff to work more on campus, increasing their percentage from 40% to 60%.
Sam Marshall, Unite Regional Officer for Liverpool University, said: “Further disruptions were entirely the fault of Liverpool University.”
“We urge Liverpool University management to maintain status quo, and to work with Unite in order to find a flexible solution that meets the needs of all parties.
We will continue to stand up for our members and their rights until that happens.
The university stated in June: “Many of our staff spend most or all of their working hours on campus. We are aiming to achieve the right balance for a higher education provider that is face-to-face.
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham stated: “This heavy handed diktat from Liverpool University is unacceptable and was done without any consideration of the effects it will have on the wellbeing, health, and personal lives of our hardworking members.
The union will continue to support its members in this dispute and refuse to accept any changes that are harmful to their working conditions.
