After the Spring Statement Katharine Moxham comments:
“Cuts affect those most vulnerable in society. Workers with disabilities or health problems need more support than ever. Employees would not leave the workplace if their employer provided better support.
“It is vital to look at how many people are out of work because of illness or disability and try to stop this flow. The responsibilities of employers are growing, especially with the welfare cuts that were reaffirmed today in the Spring Statement. Employers have a big role to play in this area and can help to keep people employed and to get them back into work.
Employers will be able to provide support and assistance for employees who are unable to work due to illness or disability. Group income protection insurance, for example, includes the ability to access vocational rehabilitation experts and receive advice and support regarding both short- and longer-term health issues. It also covers reasonable adjustments made under the Equality Act 2010 and the cost of long-term sickness pay. A group income protection insurance policy may even cover the costs of keeping a person in employment, such as equipment modifications or providing additional equipment.
The Spring Statement confirms that this trend will continue. Employers who don’t take care of their employees will lose out.
