The physical comedy is one of my favorite aspects of Improv. The last row of the audience is meant to see the big hand gestures, yoga poses and eye rolling. It’s amazing.
Not all scenes lend themselves to dramatic or melodramatic. When I’m in an environment that’s not conducive to dramatic or melodramatic gestures, I keep it under control.
Why? Why? Because I have to act out the scene that I am in.
Well, duh. It would be ridiculous for me to do yoga poses in a Michelin starred restaurant when I was supposed to be an agitated waitress.
What is the practical application of this? Are you playing the scene that you are in, or are you attempting to play a completely different scene?
Now is the time to focus
Do you know who is miserable? You know who they are?
We all would love to be in the scene where we have so much time and money, that we don’t know what we will do with them! That’s not your scene. This is not my scene. We have different scenes.
Sometimes those scenes can be terrible. You may have a scene about a bad relationship, a bad job or toenail fungus. This is your scene.
If you want to escape, you have to play the game.
Guess what happens if you sit and scream and cry that you want to be in another scene? You’ll never escape .
After all, you don’t treat toenail fungal infections by becoming friends with yacht owners. You might get a free ride on a boat, but you will still have fungus in your toenails.
It’s not possible to get out of an unhappy marriage or bad job simply by saying that you would rather be in another job or marriage.
It’s important to know the situation you are in.
Focus on your current situation, not the one you would like to have.
What is the playback of the scene that you are in?
Thank you for your question.
You can get toenail fungal infection by going to the pharmacy, asking for a toenail-fungus medicine, and then following the instructions. If this doesn’t help, then you should consult your doctor.
You can act out the scene in any way you want if you’re stuck at a bad job. You can
- You can only hope to get a promotion if you work hard.
- Quit
- Find a job elsewhere and quit.
- Recognize that you are lucky to have a job right now.
- You will gain more skills if you accept that this is all you have right now.
- Subvert your boss to get her fired
- You can get unemployment benefits if you’re fired.
- Combinations of the above
I would never recommend that you undermine your boss. You are a bad person if you do that. You have to face the problem of your job.
I get emails from people in horrible jobs. When I ask people how long they have had their terrible jobs, the answer can be something like “eight years.”
It is obvious that this person is not enjoying the situation they are in. This person is not trying to improve a bad situation. They complain, wish they were somewhere else, and hope the job fairy can take them away.
You must acknowledge the situation you are in, and then begin the process of saying yes. You’ll be successful if you do. You can turn a bad situation into a positive one.
