Leadership Lessons From Cory Booker’s Filibuster : Focus on the message, not the spotlight

Cory Booker, a U.S. Senator from New Jersey (D), broke the record of the longest filibuster in the Senate. According to Ed Kilgore a political analyst, his goal was to “dramatize” the extent and intensity of the threats that Trump, Elon Mush, and other presidential stooges present to the government and democracy as we know them.

If this was the intention, then the media would have focused on the content of the speech and not the filibuster records.

The focus of headlines and reporting was not on the policies Booker advocated or the solutions that he proposed. The focus was on the record-breaking address, which overshadowed the speech’s purpose. It’s a warning to leaders of all types: Do your actions drive meaningful change or are they just grabbing the attention?
