The MPs will address workplace health

MPs from across the country have gathered to discuss ways to improve our health through work and workplaces.

A new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Healthy Places has held its first meeting.

The APPG (Ad Hoc Parliamentary Group) is a cross-party informal group that brings together MPs and Lords with a shared interest in a specific policy area.

The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has lobbied to bring together this latest APPG, which covers all areas of political interest.

The aim is to “provide a platform for Parliamentarians who can discuss the role that diverse settings play in improving health outcomes and the potential of services provided in these settings to make a healthier nation.”

The APPG will also bring together experts, parliamentarians and others to discuss the changes that need to be made to create healthier spaces and places, to prevent health conditions from developing and to reduce the pressure on the NHS.

Beccy cooper, Labour MP of Worthing West, chairs the APPG. The first meeting focused on , a report from the RSPH that examined the impact of workplaces on health and productivity.

The Parliamentarians also looked at RSPH research , which indicated that over a million workers do not currently have access to basic healthcare support in the workplace.

The event was attended by representatives from government, businesses and trade unions to discuss how they can work together for better health outcomes in the workplace, according to RSPH.

The discussion included how to improve the delivery of health services at work through occupational health. It also discussed how to adapt and administer occupational health to different businesses and workforces, including SMEs.

The RSPH stated that the first meeting revealed a desire for employers to improve their employees’ health.
